Q. Should I consider outsourcing my safety and health?
A. Should you wish to do so, it is perfectly feasible to set up your own safety and health section and handle everything in-house, but can you be sure to have all the competencies needed to comply with the latest legislation. Do you have cover in case an accident occurs when key personnel are on holiday or off sick and do you have continuity for when key people move on?

Q. I am not looking to outsource as we have an internal safety and health team but how do I get better advice?
A. If you still prefer to handle most of your safety and health in-house, you can call on EDP for specialist services, such as advice on a construction project, or to provide a training programme for your staff. In effect, EDP can be your "insurance" in case you lose key members of staff or need to cover for other resource shortages.

Q. I already have a comprehensive safety and health policy in-house, why do I need a Safety Management System?
A. Your Policy is your stated commitment, which is the essential first step in workplace safety and health. However, unless you put your documented intentions into practice, they are only evidence that you know what you should do even though you haven't done anything. Q. What's different about EDP's Safety Management System?
A. Plenty companies will offer you an off-the-shelf Safety Management System. At EDP we believe that every organisation has its own personality, culture and, of course, risks that need to be addressed.

Q. How much does a Safety Management System cost?
A. In terms of the up front investment it is impossible to suggest an amount without knowing more about your organisation, for example, the people you employ, the kind of work they do and the workplaces where they do it (i.e. People, Processes and Premises).

What we do know is that if things go wrong, the cost of ignoring safety and health can be much greater than addressing it properly in the first place. Furthermore, when properly implemented, a good Safety Management System can save you money, so that all-in-all it results in a net gain.

Q. I only need risk assessments completing, can EDP still help?
A. Some organisation have most of their safety and health already covered but need additional help to bring them up to full compliance with legislation - for example with some risk assessments in specialist areas.

You can call in EDP to undertake any individual services you need - simply let us know your requirements. However, we also advise that legal compliance, though laudable, should be only the first target. All safety and health standard models aim to go beyond this to a regime of continuous improvement.
